Book Review

-| Audiobook Review… The Book of M |-

So today I’m reviewing The Book of M by Peng Shepherd which I listened to on audio via Scribd. I had no idea what to expect but this definitely wasn’t it!

Let’s get started…

In the middle of a market in India, a man’s shadow disappears. As rolling twenty-four-hour news coverage tries to explain the event, more cases are discovered. The phenomenon spreads like a plague as people learn the true cost of their lost part: their memories.
Two years later, Ory and his wife Max have escaped ‘the Forgetting’ by hiding in an abandoned hotel deep in the woods in Virgina. They have settled into their new reality, until Max, too, loses her shadow.
Knowing the more she forgets, the more dangerous she will become to the person most precious to her, Max runs away. But Ory refuses to give up what little time they have left before she loses her memory completely, and desperately follows her trail.
On their separate journeys, each searches for answers: for Ory, about love, about survival, about hope; and for Max, about a mysterious new force growing in the south that may hold the cure. But neither could have guessed at what you gain when you lose your shadow: the power of magic.
-Goodreads-

I didn’t read the full synopsis for this book beforehand so I went into it pretty blind. When people start to lose their shadows they also lose their memories. What do we become if we can’t remember our names, where we grew up or even how to open a door?

I loved Ory and Max as characters, with the audiobook we had two narrators, one for each which really brought life to them and made me feel like they were sharing their stories with me. I loved the strength of their relationship especially when Max started to lose her shadow, seeing the lengths they went to to try and prevent the inevitable. “Blue, fifty-two”.

I really enjoyed our other points of view aswell, Naz and “The One Who Gathers”. The author has a way of writing characters that I become invested in, I feel what they feel and I want them to succeed in everything that they’re planning.

About three-quarters into it the book started to take a different turn and elements began to develop where it just started to become too much and it took me out of the story. I’m having to be really vague here as I don’t want to spoil anything for you. This is just a personal preference as the elements were not to my taste so I had a real hard time trying to rate this book, the first half was a 5 and the second half for me was a 3 so I think I’m gonna have to meet in the middle.

See you guys in the next one…

  1. Great review! I’ve heard lots of good things about this one but I feel like it’s a little underrated. I’ve had it sitting on my shelf for ages so really need to get on it 😀 The characters sound really good!
