So today i’m closing the blog tour for Qualityland by Marc-Uwe Kling and I’m so excited to share this book with you. I can already tell you that I will be including this in my best books of 2020 list in December!! A big thank you to Tracy from Compulsive Readers for inviting me to Qualityland.
THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY meets 1984. In the near-future, all decision-making is automated, until one man makes a brazen choice of his own, with global consequences.
Welcome to QualityLand, the best country on Earth. Here, a universal ranking system determines the social advantages and career opportunities of every member of society. An automated matchmaking service knows the best partners for everyone and helps with the break up when your ideal match (frequently) changes. And the foolproof algorithms of the biggest, most successful company in the world, TheShop, know what you want before you do and conveniently deliver to your doorstep before you even order it.
In QualityCity, Peter Jobless is a machine scrapper who can’t quite bring himself to destroy the imperfect machines sent his way, and has become the unwitting leader of a band of robotic misfits hidden in his home and workplace. One day, Peter receives a product from TheShop he absolutely, positively knows he does not want, and which he decides, at great personal cost, to return. The only problem: doing so means proving the perfect algorithm of TheShop wrong, calling into question the very foundations of QualityLand itself.
This is the most bizarre book that I’ve ever read and honestly I couldn’t give it anything less than 5 stars! We start this book with a tour guide pamphlet and technical note, I knew straight away that this book was going to be something completely different to my regular reads.
I think it’s obvious that your economic system is so ineffective it’s downright laughable. You’re nowhere near the goal of distributing wealth in a way that’s beneficial to society as a whole…
This is both hilarious and terrifying look at the near future where algorithms take away our ability to make our own decisions. I loved Peter Jobless and his band of automated misfits, they take on the most successful company in the world TheShop. At the same time we also have the first Android running for presidency under the slogan “Machines don’t make Mistakes”.
Qualityland is such an extremely consumer driven world that we have a children’s rhyme which goes: “To make the markets fly, we just have to buy! So never share and don’t repair!” We actually have adverts written in between the chapters which fit perfectly with the themes in the book.
I could carry on but I guess I should leave it here, this book is intelligent, fascinating and definitely unique.
So who is Marc-Uwe Kling?
Marc-Uwe Kling is one of the most successful authors in Germany. His latest book QualityLand is an astounding satire of the future that sometimes feels closer to the present than you could wish for. QualityLand spent months on the German bestseller lists, has up to now been translated into twenty-four languages and the HBO is planning an adaptation with Mike Judge as show runner.
I really hope that you do pick this book up as it’s one that will stay with me for a very long time.
See you in the next one…
