So today is my stop on the tour for Are You Watching by Vincent Ralph, this tour is hosted by the lovely Anne from Random Things Tours so a big thank you for having me.
Let’s get started…
Ten years ago, Jess’s mother was murdered by the Magpie Man.
She was the first of his victims but not the last.
Now Jess is the star of a YouTube reality series and she’s using it to catch the killer once and for all.
The whole world is watching her every move.
And so is the Magpie Man.
– Goodreads –
This was my first read of 2020 and oh boy was it a good one! I was a little dubious with it being a YA thriller as I feel they don’t always take things as far as they could however that wasn’t the case with this book. I absolutely loved the pacing and the direction that the author steered us. The use of a reality show on a social media website is such a fab concept that’s also really current and relatable especially to those of us who are hooked on Booktube videos. I didn’t even guess the identity of the Magpie Man which made the book even more enjoyable.
My little criticism is the selfish behaviour of Jess, I found her to be really annoying at times with her way of thinking. Her mother had been killed which is absolutely terrible, she was just so wrapped up in her own self-centred bubble that she just couldn’t see the struggles of those around her. This may just be clouded by my own experience as my dad died when I was a teenager so I couldn’t help but compare it to my behaviour around that time which I know isn’t right as we all try to come to terms with it in our own way.
I do however appreciate her growth and development throughout the book with the really clever use of the week long retreat, she didn’t just wake up one morning and suddenly started to care about other people.
This book was so addictive that I flew through it in two sittings and the only reason why I didn’t finish it in the one go is because I have a toddler. I’m so excited to see what Vincent Ralph has in store for us next!
So who is Vincent Ralph?
Vincent Ralph has been writing in one form or another since his teens and always dreamed of being a novelist. He owes his love of books to his mother, who encouraged his imagination from an early age and made sure there were new stories to read.
Vincent has lived in London, Cornwall and Chester but he now lives in his home county of Kent with his wife, son and two cats.
