So, today I’m bringing you my reviews for the 7th & 8th instalments in the Robert Hunter series by Chris Carter. Here you can catch up on my reviews for No.3 & 4 as well as No. 5 & 6. These will be very short reviews as I don’t like saying too much as I don’t want to spoil the thrill for you, just know that this is my favourite ever series (which is a little worrying as the are deeply disturbing) and I’m currently listening to No.9!
If you are interested in any of these books but don’t want to commit to the whole series then you can absolutely read any of these as a standalone, you are given the important information in each book so you’re not missing out on any information really.
Hold on to your hats, these books definitely won’t be for everyone, let’s go…
In this pulse-pounding thriller from bestselling writer Chris Carter, criminal behaviour psychologist turned LAPD detective Robert Hunter finds himself engaged in a brutal game to the finish with a ruthless opponent. But no matter what moves Hunter makes, death is coming….
At the Los Angeles International Airport, the body of a twenty-year-old woman is discovered. The autopsy reveals that she had been tortured and murdered in a most bizarre way—but the surprises don’t end there. The killer likes to play, and he left something behind for the cops to find.
LAPD Detective Robert Hunter is assigned to the case but almost immediately a second body turns up. Surrounded by new challenges as every day passes, Hunter finds himself chasing a monster—one with a dark past and whose desire to hurt people and thirst for murder can never be quenched.

This book has the creepiest opening chapter I’ve ever read! The fact that I was listening to this on audio actually gave me goosebumps and made me shout “HOLY SHIT, WTF!” I will say that there are some tough scenes of physical & psychological abuse, which were a little difficult to listen to.
The thrill of this book has to be one of the best that I have read, I honestly believe that if you enjoy this genre then you should try these on audio as the narrator does an amazing job. The fact that I listen on 1.8x speed also increases the tension and adds to the creepy atmosphere.
After a tough week, Tanya Kaitlin is looking forward to a relaxing night in, but as she steps out of her shower, she hears her phone ring. The video call request comes from her best friend, Karen Ward. Tanya takes the call and the nightmare begins.
Karen is gagged and bound to a chair in her own living room. If Tanya disconnects from the call, if she looks away from the camera, he will come after her next, the deep, raspy, demonic voice at the other end of the line promises her.
As Detectives Robert Hunter and Carlos Garcia investigate the threats, they are thrown into a rollercoaster of evil, chasing a predator who scouts the streets and social media networks for victims, taunting them with secret messages and feeding on their fear.
This has to be one of the most unique and disturbing plots that I have ever come across! Video calling the person closest to the victim and forcing them to watch the torture that is about to be inflicted on the victim. This isn’t any ordinary killer, what has happened to make them chose to be so sadistic?
There is definitely a strong message at the end of this book which did set in motion the series of events which we witnessed. I honestly can’t get enough of these books, Carter has a way of grabbing your attention from the very first shocking chapter and not letting go of you until you have closed the last page!
Have you read any in this series?
See you in the next one…
