So, here is my stop on the Retriever of Souls which is the beginning of the D.I. Sterling Series. I’m actually really excited to share this with you! I finished it about 2 weeks ago and it’s been so hard not being able to post it until now!
(Spoiler Alert: This is seriously making it’s way up to being in my top 5 book series)
Let’s get started…
Brought up believing that sex is the devil’s work, a killer only finds release once he has saved his victim’s souls. Abiding by his vision, he marks them as his. A gift to guide his chosen ones on the rightful path to redemption.
Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling is out to stop him, but Paolo has problems of his own. Hunting down the killer as the death toll rises, the lines soon blur between Paolo’s personal and professional lives.
I could not put my kindle down while reading this! I’m a massive fan of a police procedural especially when it is part of a series, which you probably already know if you have been following my blog for a little while. One of the main things I love about this genre is the protagonist, which in this case is D.I. Paolo Sterling, not having their life together. Struggling with a work life balance, which pulls their life into a downward spiral.
Paolo is extremely relatable, separated from his long term wife with a teenage daughter. I love the dynamics of the relationship between Paolo and his daughter, it’s quite strained at times as many relationships are when children become teenagers. Yet you can tell that they have something special.
The case is something that I haven’t come across very often, a religious man wanting to cleanse women who he believes are doing the devils work. The case becomes especially difficult when it becomes entwined with a group of men that Paolo went to school with and doesn’t necessarily share fond memories with. It takes a turn for the worse when it becomes extremely personal to Paolo!
It isn’t very often that I just know I’m gonna fall in love with a series halfway through the first book! I’m so grateful that I get to review the next two instalments as I couldn’t stop myself from starting the second book which is called Children in Chains. Keep your eyes peeled for that!
If it wasn’t obvious already I’m giving Retriever of Souls a massive 5 cups of coffee out of 5.
